As a content marketing agency, we know there’s no such thing as too much information. Too much information can overwhelm and drive traffic away from your website. A common issue is not knowing where to draw the line—particularly when there is a lot of information you wish to convey.
When it comes to content creation, there’s no “one size fits all.” The amount of content you need to create will depend on a number of factors, including the type of page you are creating, the reader’s search intent and the topic you are covering.
Too Much Content
If you’re looking to produce a page for the keyword “online calculator” and fill it with walls of text, videos, and images…you’re not hitting that intent. So your page won’t have a lot of content on it—people who are searching this term just want to be met with a calculator tool, not to learn about the history of mathematics or see images of calculators.
Posting too much information too frequently can be frustrating for readers. Don’t confuse them with your words; make sure your content is clear, concise, and most importantly—interesting to the reader.
Too Little Content
If your content isn’t long enough, there’s also a good chance you haven’t covered everything you need to. Content that is too thin won’t resolve the user’s question or search query, and it will come down to the user intent again. If someone is searching for the “ultimate guide to SEO,” then they want a lot of information—right? They want to know about the different SEO techniques, the results they can expect, how they can do it themselves—oh wait, nevermind.
If you’re constantly struggling with having too little content, our top tip is to do more research. Research your topic until you have all the information necessary in order to write an informative and engaging piece of content.
Perfect Amount of Content
There is no set word count for content marketing. The simple answer is that a webpage or article should be as long as it needs to be. In general, however, research has shown that pages are usually between 300 and 2,000 words; however, depending on the topic and what you want to achieve with the page, this number may be different.
On the other hand, if the user is searching with an intent to find information on a particular topic, including the ultimate guide to SEO, then 300 words are not going to be enough.
